Keeping Your Air Compressor in an Even Better Shape

Judicious do-it-yourselfers realize that their machines can only function well if they are well maintained. These are made of several moving parts that inevitably generate friction and vibration when they operate. These, in turn, lead to wear and tear that eventually results to engine deterioration. The life of the machine, however, can be greatly extended if it is properly looked after.
After unpacking your air compressor, removing it from its box and setting aside the polystyrene foam, the first thing you should do is read the manual. Manuals usually begin with a list of dos and don’ts that are designed to prolong the life of your machine. Although you might find that some of them are rather basic, it is always possible to find an item among them that is specifically relevant to your new compressor.
When the compressor has been used for a while, check the air intake vents. Be sure that these are kept clean at all times in order not to unduly strain both the engine and pump as they compress air. Related to this, check the air filters and replace them if they become too dirty.
Engine vibration can cause screws and nuts and bolts to loosen. They should thus be regularly checked and tightened if there is any loosening.
Safety features are incorporated in most, if not all, compressors. These include a thermal switch that shuts the engine in case of overheating. Another switch turns it off in case of low oil levels. Ensure that these safety features are functioning properly by regularly inspecting their switches.
Even if your machine is equipped with a low-oil-pressure safety switch, you still need to check the oil dipstick daily to ensure that it has adequate lubrication. The safety switch is intended only as a back-up to your regular checking.
The fuel tank, too, needs inspecting and cleaning as gasoline could leave residues over time. This could adversely affect the motor’s combustion and performance.
You can think of these small steps as the start of your long journey with your air compressor.
